Grand Rounds Project
For this project we had to essentially become doctors and listen to various patient's symptoms. Everyone's disease or syndrome was relating to the Endocrine system. I learned that the amount of calcium and other materials in your blood stream can affect your endocrine system in so many ways. The endocrine system is responsible for controlling the release of hormones.
CLEAR Paragraph
Anja Damazyn was my patient and I believe that she has Hypoparathyroidism. I believe this for many reasons because of her symptoms. Anja was complaining that she has muscle spasming and cramping, tingling in her mouth and fingers, and anxiety and depression. She said that she had gotten a surgery to remove excess parathyroid glands and this caused her to not produce enough PTH which leads to an undersecretion of calcitonin which leads to deprivation of calcium in the blood stream which leads to neuromuscular excitability which then leads to muscle cramping and spasming. Calcium allows regular conduction of currents along nerves and allows muscles to contract. This effects the nerves making you feel a tingling sensation. This would explain why she feels tingling in her mouth and fingers. Finally, I believe her anxiety and depression is caused because calcium is required for bodily functions and in your nervous system, and low amounts of calcium explain the why she is feeling this way.
